Wonder Why?

An ode to the unbiased, independent, responsible visual news media in our beloved country...

The facts as we know them:

Case 1:
  • Mr.Sajjan Kumar is accused of instigating mobs that killed large numbers of Sikhs (a religious minority), in 1984, in the aftermath of the killing of Smt.Indira Gandhi.
  • Mr.Sajjan Kumar conveniently ignores court summons for years, and finally, when he does show up, he is granted bail, for Rs.50000.
  • Poor Mr.Sajjan Kumar gets all of 2 minutes devoted to him in each newscast.
Case 2:
  • Mr.Narendra Modi is accused of instigating mobs that killed large numbers of Muslims (another religious minority), in 2002, in the aftermath of the Godhra train massacre.
  • Mr.Narendra Modi gets summoned by SIT to appear before them 10 days from now.
  • Mr.Narendra Modi, lucky guy, gets whole newscasts devoted to this!
Hmm... wonder why?

Predictable media response!

On the one hand, they wring out all the juice from every event that they perceive to be Modi-negative. Then in the same breath, they say that Modi always uses such negative developments to his political advantage! Total contradiction arising out of complete confusion on how to report such events....

They know that if they overdo it, it repulses Modi supporters and gives him an advantage. But they still cannot resist the temptation to do to death, this already dead horse!

The height was a 15-second sound byte on known anti-Modi channel CNN-IBN, of former Gujarat DGP and known Modi-baiter Sreekumar, who said that this was a ploy (by whom?) to attract attention and take political mileage! Then they actually cut out the sound of Swapan Dasgupta who was trying to argue out a point, sitting away from the studio! Whew.... what next?

@Ravindra: Bullseye!
They are just happy there is something to hype up every few days, so they can fill their 24hr rant. In that quest, considerations such as what you just pointed out take a backseat. Poor souls, damned if they do, damned if they don't :-)

Because he was the CM - Head of state when he was accused. Thats not the case with SK. When you have the state head accused of instigating such crimes, it invariably means the state machinery moves in tandem towards the same motive. I agree that the media is horribly biased but there is a stark difference in this case. Thats also why Togadia does not actively feature in the news. he pretty much gets the same airplay as SK.

Again on a personal note I dont subscribe to either views. i sincerely feel the law(courts) needs to decide, not the media, no matter what it may seem. Till then, Narendra Modi is NOT guilty for me. (Personal opinion)
