Question time...

  • What is the item dominating the Indian news channels?
  • How many people died in the Malegaon blasts?
  • Was that the most people killed in a blast in the last year? Weren't there blasts that killed more people elsewhere?
  • Why aren't we hearing more about progress of investigation and/or culprits in those blasts? Do the authorities pursue the accused as vigorously as is being done in this case? If yes, why aren't those ever brought to public notice?
  • A lot was made of a certain party heavyweight being pictured with a certain religious figure under investigation. Certain other religious figure, newly under investigation has been seen with many other heavyweights, probably including those in certain other parties. Why hasn't any importance been attached to the new discovery? Convenience perhaps?

  • What is appeasement?
  • Define hype
  • When can one categorize a journalistic institution as morally bankrupt?
  • What is favouritism?

Finally,
  • Aren't news channels supposed to be completely unbiased?
  • Do we really need 24x7 news channels?

Remember, no civil society condones any act of violence, irrespective of what religion perpetrates it. What is difficult to understand is disproportionate airtime given to specific cases at times that are convenient to the media and/or government in power and sweep other such cases under the carpet.

The hope though is *every* case that causes public unrest and/or loss of life is dealt with the same vigour and attention as is being highlighted with the Malegaon blasts.

The person who masterminded the Parliament attack, the foundation of our democracy, was sentenced to death. Many many people openly protested this sentence and asked that he be let off (from the hanging at least). That's the gravest form of "Desh Droha" IMO. These channels conduct discussions to see "both" sides of the view.

BUT, when these Hindu folks are caught, the discussion is about "Has terrorism been taken up by Hindus as well" or something like that.

I hate Indian 24x7 news channels. They are ruining our minds.

Hari,
The tragedy now is there is no easy solution to this problem. Do we need an ombudsman for regulating public propaganda? Will that help? One never knows.
